Hello. Aanii. Bonjour. I’m Katrina, and I’m so glad you’re here.
I am a multicultural woman with French Canadian, Italian, and Ojibwe ancestry and I’m passionate about holistic health. A northern girl at heart, I enjoy spending time in nature with loved ones, playing with my animals, engaging my creativity, and experimenting in my kitchen.
At Horizon Healing, I offer virtual counselling from my home on Manitoulin Island in Ontario. As a psychotherapist, I strive to create an emotionally safe space that empowers self discovery and authenticity.
With experience working with a variety of different people in many different life circumstances, I know firsthand the courage required to seek help. Whoever you are, if you’re here, you’ve already taken a brave first step. The path to healing is closer than you think.
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Recognizing that mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health are intrinsically linked, we address all parts of your whole self— a self who is wonderfully complex and worthy of healing. Using evidence-based methods and a flexible approach that adapts to your unique pain and its specific needs, I weave CBT, EMDR, IFS, traditional healing insights, and more to empower you to embrace life’s highs and lows.
I am trained and equipped to address various forms of trauma, including and not limited to spiritual, intergenerational, and complex trauma. I have experience working with abuse, attachment wounds, anxiety, depression, and more.
The therapeutic relationship is collaborative. I bring my training and expertise, but you are the expert of your own life, and I am ready and willing to partner with you on this journey of self-discovery. Let’s find hope and healing together.

FAQ
I like to think about therapy the same way I think about the dentist.
To keep our teeth as healthy as can be, we see a dentist for regular check ups. We see them more frequently when we have tooth pain and need to address a problem. Psychotherapy is a lot like the dentist. (But I won’t ask you about flossing.)
You can see a psychotherapist to maintain your emotional health and keep you as healthy as can be, overall. This helps life’s ordinary struggles from becoming bigger issues of unexamined pain and trauma.
On the other hand, if you have real identifiable pain symptoms (low mood, anxiety, nightmares) or if you’ve experienced an emotional injury (loss, divorce, abuse, neglect, and more) then psychotherapy can help you tend these wounds, soothe your nervous system, and walk towards healing.
The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) requires newly registered psychotherapists (like me) to seek extra clinical supervision until I am fully qualified—it’s a way to ensure excellence at every level. I am fully certified to provide psychotherapy so long as I have a clinical supervisor, which I do. Once I meet certain requirements, I will become a Registered Psychotherapist, full stop.
Unfortunately, psychotherapy in Ontario is not covered under OHIP. Horizon Healing clients pay for their sessions out of pocket, using the credit card on file through the Jane App, or by Interac e-Transfer. Some clients submit receipts to their health benefit plans to receive a reimbursement. Currently, it is the client’s responsibility to cover the full cost of therapy and then submit the receipt for reimbursement where applicable. In the future, once Katrina becomes a fully certified Registered Psychotherapist, she will be able to bill directly to NIHB for those who have a status card number.
There are many benefits to meeting online! Not only is it convenient, but it allows you to pursue therapy in a place you’re already comfortable, whether your own home or wherever you feel most secure. It also offers a greater sense of confidentiality for those who might want their therapy to be private from friends and family and increases access to critical services where specialized treatment can be limited (i.e. northern or rural areas).
Research shows that therapy is more about the therapeutic relationship and the quality of care. The method at which this is delivered (virtual or in-person) has little impact on these, and so it comes down to personal preference.
I use the Jane App which offers a secure online platform for us to meet. Jane App is PHIPA and PIPEDA compliant. For more information on how Jane App complies to Ontario’s privacy laws, see here.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a popular form of therapy. Understanding the cognitive triad, how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are interconnected, and learning that we have control over our thoughts, can provide a great foundation for symptom reduction. CBT is widely used in supporting the treatment of anxiety and depression, amongst other presenting concerns.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a proven psychotherapeutic approach that helps individuals process and recover from trauma such as PTSD and other mental health struggles such as anxiety, depression, and fear. Recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a leading modality to treat trauma, EMDR is widely used around the globe to reduce distressing symptoms of trauma.
In short, the nervous system needs to be in balance to function properly. Trauma is like an undigested memory, blocking our ability to be balanced. EMDR supports the digestion of the traumatic memory, allowing your brain and body to process it so your nervous system can return to a state of balance and you can find wellbeing again.
Absolutely. The medium of psychotherapy (online vs in-person) does not impact the effectiveness of EMDR. I have specific training in how to facilitate EMDR in an online therapeutic setting, and am able to use digital tools that help me track and increase the effectiveness of EMDR therapy.
